What to do during a plumbing emergency
A plumbing emergency is anything that can’t wait, where leaving it could risk damage to your home, health and water supply. If you’re unsure whether your situation qualifies, call us and we’ll help you figure it out.
We also recommend taking photos of any visible damage before cleanup or repairs begin. This can be helpful if you need to make an insurance claim.
If replacement parts are required, we'll let you know upfront what we have on hand and whether anything needs to be sourced before completing the repair.
Here are the most common plumbing emergencies we see across Wellington and Porirua, along with what you should do before we arrive:
-
Blocked toilet
If your toilet is blocked, don’t keep flushing. We can help diagnose the issue on the phone, so give us a call us.
-
Toilet overflowing
Turn off the water supply valve behind the toilet base and call us immediately.
-
Burst pipe
A burst pipe can cause significant damage in minutes. Turn off your water at the toby (mains) right away, then call us. See our guide on how to find your toby.
-
Leaking pipes
Even a slow leak can damage walls, floors and cabinetry over time. If you can see a water leak where it shouldn’t be, it’s worth a call.
-
No hot water
Waking up to no hot water is miserable, and it's one of our most common call-outs. Before you call, a quick check can save you time: feel the pipes running into the top of your hot water cylinder. If they're cold and nothing's leaking, it's likely an electrical fault rather than a plumbing one, and an electrician is who you need. If the pipes are warm, or you're not sure, give us a call and we'll help you sort it out.
-
Hot water cylinder leaking
Water around your cylinder is a sign something’s failed. Turn off the water supply if you can and call us.
-
Blocked or overflowing drains
Blocked drains in Wellington homes can back up fast. If water is coming up through floor drains, sinks, or overflowing from the outside gulley call us.
-
Sewage or wastewater backing up
This is a serious health hazard. Stay away from the affected area and call us immediately.
-
Flooding from a failed appliance
Dishwashers, washing machines and hot water cylinders can all fail and flood. Turn off the appliance and your water supply, then call us.
-
Leaking roof or spouting
If water is getting into your home through the roof from overflowing spouting, call us. We can assess and help prevent further damage.
-
No water supply
First, check the Wellington Water outage map at wellingtonwater.co.nz, if it’s a council mains issue, they’ll be on it. If your neighbours have water and you don’t, call us.
-
Gas leaks
If you smell gas, leave the building immediately, don’t touch any switches and call 111 or your gas supplier.
How to find your toby
If you have a burst pipe or sudden water leak, the first thing to do is find your toby and turn off your water supply.
Your toby is the mains shutoff valve - usually located near your boundary on the street - and knowing where it is before an emergency happens can save you thousands in water damage.
We’ve put together a full guide with a step-by-step video: How to find and turn off your toby.
