How to Install a Dishwasher: A Guide for New Zealand Homeowners

Installing a new dishwasher can transform your kitchen routine - saving time and making cleanup easy.

Personally, we’re fans of a Fisher and Paykel Dishdrawer. Two dishwashers in the space of one, meaning you can pop one on after each meal and don’t have to run out of forks waiting for the dishwasher to be full to run a cycle! (or was that just us?)

Either way, this guide walks you through exactly how to install a dishwasher in New Zealand — step by step.

Do You Need a Plumber to Install a Dishwasher in NZ?

At Ka Pai Plumbing, the team understands the importance of getting it done right. Whether you're confident in your DIY skills or prefer to leave it to your usual plumber, it's worth knowing where the line is before you start.

In New Zealand, connecting a dishwasher to an existing water supply and drain is generally considered low-risk plumbing that a competent DIYer can do. However, if you need new water supply lines installed, waste pipes modified, or any work done on your home's plumbing system, this must be carried out by a licensed plumber under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 2006.

If you're not sure which situation applies to you, give Ka Pai Plumbing a call — a professional dishwasher installation in Wellington typically takes around an hour and gives you the peace of mind that connections are leak-free and compliant. Otherwise, read on and we'll walk you through exactly how to do it.

What You’ll Need to Install a Dishwasher

Tools:

  • Adjustable spanner/wrench

  • Screwdrivers

  • Bucket or towel (to catch any water)

  • Power drill (optional)

Required connections:

If you’re replacing an old dishwasher, disconnect it from power, water, and drainage before starting. For a brand-new installation, make sure a water supply line, drain line, and power outlet are ready for connection (you might need to call your usual electrician for this).

Step 1: Prepare the Space

  • Turn Off Utilities
Shut off the water supply and power to the area where you’ll install the dishwasher.

  • Measure the Space
Measure your cabinet opening to ensure your dishwasher fits snugly. Most dishwashers are 600 mm wide, but it’s always good to double-check.

  • Inspect Connections
Confirm that the water inlet, drain, and power outlet are accessible and in good condition.

  • Disconnect the Old Dishwasher
If replacing an old dishwasher, disconnect it from water, power, and drainage before removing it.

Step 2: Connect the Water Supply

  • Attach the dishwasher’s water hose to the supply line in the kitchen. In NZ, this is typically a 20mm BSP (British Standard Pipe) thread connection. Hand-tighten first, then use an adjustable spanner to secure firmly.

  • Tighten it securely, but don’t overtighten.

Step 3: Connect the Drain Hose

  • Connect the dishwasher’s drain hose to your sink’s waste pipe. There should typically be a connection like in this picture shown.

  • Use a hose clamp for a secure fit, and ensure the drain hose forms a high loop to prevent backflow.

Step 4: Connect the Power

  • Plug the dishwasher into a grounded electrical outlet. For hardwired setups, ensure all connections are properly insulated and secured.

Step 5: Position, Level and Secure

  • Slide the Dishwasher Into Place
Carefully slide the dishwasher into its spot, ensuring hoses and wires aren’t pinched.

  • Level the Dishwasher
Adjust the dishwasher’s feet (with a wrench if required) to make it level. This is crucial for proper drainage and operation.

Step 6: Run a Test Cycle

  • Turn on the water and power. Run a short rinse or quick-wash cycle and watch carefully for any leaks at the water inlet, drain connection, or underneath the unit. If everything looks good after a full cycle, you're done.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dishwasher Installation

Q: Do I need a plumber to install a dishwasher?
A: Not always, but hiring a professional can prevent costly mistakes like leaks or voided warranties. You also need to make sure the correct connections are available for your dishwasher. If these are not there then you would generally need a plumber.

Q: How long does it take to install a dishwasher?
A: A professional installation takes about 1 hour, while DIY-ing may take longer depending on your experience.

Q: What if there’s no water supply line near my dishwasher?
A: This is common in older NZ homes where dishwashers weren't originally planned for. A licensed plumber can run a new supply line from under the sink.
