Case Study: Channel Drain Installation at Kenepuru ECE

When Miles Construction engaged us to complete the full plumbing and drainage package for the new Kenepuru Early Childhood Education Centre, we were proud to bring our expertise to a project that directly supports our Porirua community. As a locally owned, Ngāti Toa business, working on a Toa Developments project is meaningful mahi - a perfect example of what drives us every day.

This channel drain installation formed one part of the wider new-build ECE project, where the goal was simple: create a safe, durable, and high-performing environment for the tamariki and kaimahi who will use this space for years to come.

Setting the Foundation: Why Drainage Matters in New Builds

When you’re building from the ground up, good drainage isn’t a “nice to have” - it’s essential. For an early childhood centre, the stakes are even higher. High-use areas like entryways, footpaths, and outdoor play zones need to stay dry, safe, and accessible, no matter the weather.

As part of our full plumbing and drainage scope for the Kenepuru ECE project, installing a channel drain system was key to managing surface water effectively.

Our Approach: Precision Drainage From Start to Finish

Our team installed a commercial-grade channel drain system that would stand the test of time and the test of hundreds of tiny feet running across it each day.

Our process included:

  • Carefully cutting a clean line through concrete to create a 300mm trench

  • Excavating to correct fall, ensuring water reliably moves away from high-use areas

  • Installing the 100mm Marley Connecto system, known for durability and performance

  • Connecting the channel drain to the existing stormwater network

From the straightness of the concrete cut to the polish of the reinstatement, every step reflected the standard our customers know us for — meticulous work, no matter the job.

What Channel Drains Do for Your Property

While this installation was part of a commercial new build, the same principles apply to homes across Porirua and Wellington. If you’ve noticed water pooling on your driveway, patio, or near your home’s foundation, a channel drain can:

  • Reduce slipping hazards

  • Prevent flooding and pooling

  • Protect your concrete and foundations

  • Keep water away from buildings

  • Make outdoor spaces more usable year-round

If you're a homeowner searching for a reliable plumber Porirua wide, we’re always here to help.
